  The award is conferred together with a diploma on persons or institutions that have distinguished themselves in some way in the mountain world.
All through the ages the relation between man and mountains has been charged with meaning, and it is thus fitting that singular achievements in this field should be honoured by an Award, to be known as the King Albert Medal of Merit, since 2004 as the King Albert Mountain Award.
The distinction will be accorded from time to time at the discretion of the Foundation.
